T2-Video Games

Video Games

What is a Video game?

A Video game is a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a monitor or other display. Many video games are put into genres and here are the types of genres for video games...

Sims 3 is under the genre "Simulation" and "Role-play".
  • Action
  • Shooter
  • Action adventure
  • Adventure
  • Role-play
  • Simulation
  • Sports
  • Strategy
  • Survival Horror

For my existing product research for video games I decided to look at "Fallout 4". Fallout is a series of post-apocalyptic role-playing video games. It was created by Interplay Entertainment.

The target audience for Fallout 4 would be mainly male aged around the ages 16-20 because of the content within the game. The trailers which have been released for Fallout 4 have been rated PEGI 15 but the game to buy has been rated 18+.

Genre:
Fallout 4 does not come under one specific genre but personally I would say the film comes under Survival, Post-apocalypse, Role play and worst case scenario. The game would come under survival because the main aim to the game is to survive and the game would also come under Post-apocalypse because going back to survival, the aim to the game is to survive through a post-apocalypse.

Role Play is also a definite genre for Fallout 4 too as when  playing the game you play as a character and are made to feel like you have a role in the game.

Duration:
The duration of the trailers vary between 3.04 and just under 4.00 minutes. Compared to a lot of trailers such as Sims for example the trailer is a lot longer. This would have bee done so people who have an interest in the game can get a real feel of the game and it would have been classed as a "Full Trailer". As the length is so long the trailer would of most likely been shown in cinemas and YouTube.

As the trailer is so long it wouldn't of been shown on TV channels as it would of taken too long to show.

Mise En Scene for trailer:
As Fallout 4 is a survival role play game there are lots of elements to the trailer to do with Mis En Scene. For example a lightening bolt appears at the start of the trailer representing that the trailer is to fallout 4. This is good as it will show straight away to big fans that it is fallout 4 making them want to carry on watching.
Here are some other examples of Mis En Scene in the Fallout 4 trailer:

  • Military- This is a big part of what the game is about so it is important that military is shown throughout the trailer.
  • Police Dog- A police dog is shown throughout the trailer and it looks like he is one of the main characters to the game.  This is important as it shows people who are interested in the game what players there are.
  • Techno Cross Cutting
  • Jump Cut
  • Fade
Content for Trailer:
The content to the fallout 4 trailer all relates as it all goes back to the genre which is survival and role play. The content to the trailer is Nuclear, War still going on, threats and mutant.

Within the trailer there is also cross cutting done between the 1950's and 1960's(The future). Personally, I think this is a really nice feature to the trailer as it shows the differences between the two eras.

Sound for Fallout 4:
The distortion sound is used at the start of the trailer which is a really alarming and scary sound. This has been done to draw people into the trailer as the sound is that alarming it will make people want to watch. The music after the distortion sound turns in to typical 1950's music which straight away lets the audience know what era the game is going to be set in. The 1950's music at the same time as setting the scene it also quite creepy.

After the music stops, there is a creepy voice saying "Its all over". This was a good idea for the trailer as you don't hear any speech in the trailer up until this part. It has also been said in a creepy voice and leaves the trailer as a cliff hanger after this.
